May 2026 – Osaka 2026 and Tokyo Design Festa Spring 2026

To make up for last month’s pitiful entry, this post has a report on my trip to Osaka, the latest from Tokyo Design Festa and more!

先月あまり書かなかったので、この投稿は大阪の旅行のレポートとか東京デザインフェスタのニュースとかで償います。

Meiji Shrine Spring Grand Festival

The large shrine inside the even larger Yoyogi Park held a festival that featured traditional Japanese arts. I caught a hogaku and hobu dance performance, but the band composed of shamisen, drums, and 3 singers stole the show. (Also, thumbs down to all the tourists holding their cameras above their heads, blocking the view of the folks behind them.)

もともと大きい代々木公園の中の大きい神社で伝統工芸の祭りがありました。邦楽と邦舞の大踊りを見たけれど、三味線と太鼓と三人の歌手のバンドのほうが面白かったです。（そして後ろに立っている人のビューを遮って頭の上にカメラを持っているツーリストが嫌でした。）

Namba Yasaka Shrine

This Shinto shrine is famous for its giant lion-head-shaped stone building. (Also, thumbs down to all the tourists taking an hour’s worth of selfies in front of every monument.)

この神社は大きいライオンの頭の石の建物で有名です。（そして皆の記念碑の前で一時間もセルフィを撮っているツーリストが嫌でした。）

Kishiwada Castle

This 15th century castle is much less famous than Osaka Castle. However, its walls and moat are beautiful and the rock garden is fantastic. The lack of tourists made my visit quiet and pleasant.

この15世紀の城は大阪城より有名ではありません。でも石垣と堀は素晴らしくて石庭も素敵です。ツーリストがあまりいないから静かで快適でした。

Shitennoji

Thought to be the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, this site is filled with beautiful buildings and statues. It is exactly large enough to get lost in, as I did for a few moments.

この敷地は素晴らしい建物と偶像でいっぱいで、日本の最古のお寺だと思われます。道に迷うくらい大きくて、やっぱり少し迷いました。

Osaka Museum of History

The main feature of this multi-floor museum is a detailed exhibition about the construction of the Osaka Castle. The opposite wall has windows overlooking the actual castle, making it easy to mentally connect the two. Although my favorite exhibits were the old art.

この複数階からなる博物館の見どころは、大阪城の建築の展示です。向かい壁には本物を見下ろす窓があるから、展示内容と実物を脳の中で結びつけやすいです。でも古いアートの展示がいちばん好きでした。

Osaka Municipal Housing Museum

This museum is mostly comprised of the recreation of an Edo era village. The night-and-day cycle of the lights, authentic-sounding background noise, and full scale homes and businesses were pretty immersive. I especially like the migrant worker apartments, which aren’t that different from studios in Tokyo now.

この博物館はほとんど江戸の村の復元です。四六時中の昼夜を再現した照明やリアルな環境音と実物大の家と店でとても没入感がありました。特に今の東京のワンルームみたいな出稼ぎ労働者向けの長屋が面白かったです。

Tokyo Design Festa Spring 2026

This show never fails to entertain me with its live painting and main state performances. This year my favorite was a solo shamisen concert. This event rarely features traditional music and instruments like this.

このショーのライブペインティングとメインステージの演奏は、いつも本当におもしろいです。今年一番好きなのはソロの三味線の演奏でした。このイベントではそのような島唄と楽器がめったにありません。
