This month I have a bunch of photos from Tokyo Game Show and Kanazawa, a.k.a. “Little Kyoto.”
Tokyo Game Show
Although there were not many new games of interest to me this year, I always enjoy the cacophony of the booths and creativity of the cosplayers.
Kanazawa
Looking for a relaxing vacation, I chose Kanazawa, a big city on the opposite side of Japan from Tokyo. I figured that no one really goes to Kanazawa. Turns out, everyone goes to Kanazawa and the trip was more crowded, stressful, and difficult than I imagined.
Kanazawa Station
Kanazawa’s surprises begin at the station, with its impressive gate and lattice-work awning.
Kanazawa Castle
Kanazawa Castle’s exterior is quite beautiful, although the interior has not been developed into an interesting museum yet. My favorite spot was on a nearby hill where you could look over the castle and into the city.
Kenroku-En
Kanazawa was so crowded that there were long lines for buses, restaurants, museums, and even for popular photo spots within the giant Kenroku-En park. I still managed to find a few serene scenes.
Higashi Chaya
This city district has preserved many geisha houses as lavish tea cafes. Since Kanazawa is the gold capital of Japan, you can also buy expensive treats covered in gold leaf.
Nagamachi
This district is home to many preserved samurai houses, ranging from mansions of the upper class warriors to the apartments of common soldiers. I was fascinated by the once-defensive canals that run through the town, requiring many small foot bridges.
