September 2022 – Odawara Castle

Two tropical storms did their level best to ruin my week off this month, but I managed to dodge the raindrops long enough to see a few things near Tokyo. Check out this post if you like big replicas of robots, castles, or China.

二つの台風は私の今月の一週間の休暇を台無しにしようとしたけれど、雨を避けて東京の近辺の物を見にいきました。大きいロボットや城や中国の復元品が好きだったらこのポストを読んでください。

Odaiba Gundam

The Unicorn Gundam in front of the DiverCity mall in Odaiba is a very nice, if not very dynamic, 1:1 scale Gundam robot. It has a light and music show that is so short that I missed it when I was two minutes late returning from lunch.

お台場のダイバーシティ東京の前の実物大ユニコーンガンダム立像は動けないけれど面くて、1対1の倍率のガンダムです。電気と音楽のショーがあるけれど、昼ご飯から二分遅れて戻ったから見ませんでした。

The mall contains the Gundam Base plastic model store with its dizzying variety of types of robots. I really enjoyed the dioramas scattered around. I did not buy any new models because I already have a closet full of unassembled robots. Instead, I found a little key chain with my birthday on a fob.

モールの中のガンダムベースというプラモデル店には、プラモデルの種類がすごくたくさんあります。あちこちのジオラマは素晴らしいです。押し入れにまだ組み立てないモデルがたくさんあるから、新しいモデルを買いませんでした。代わりに自分の誕生日を書いた小さいキーホルダーを見つけました。

Odawara Castle

2 hours south of Tokyo lies Odawara, which is known for its not quite authentic replica of an important castle from the Kamakura period. The museum inside contains a lot of cool artwork and the Hotoku Ninomiya shrine behind the castle is very beautiful.

東京の南から2時間かけたところに、鎌倉時代の大切な城のあまり正確じゃない復元品で有名な小田原があります。城の中の芸術館はきれいな作品がたくさんあって、後ろの報徳二宮神社はとても素晴らしいです。

Yokohama Chinatown

For absolutely no good reason whatsoever, I had never visited the second largest city in Japan, even though it is less than 45 minutes from my home. I corrected this oversight this month. However, a rainstorm made my visit frustratingly short. I managed to shoot Chinatown for about an hour before the rain ruined the rest of the day.

家から45分以下の近さなのに、日本の二番目に大きい町の横浜を訪ねたことがありませんでした。今月、この落ち度を直しました。残念なことに暴風雨は訪問を短くしました。雨が残りの日を台無しにする前に一時間、横浜中華街を撮影しました。

The Chinese-style facades of the buildings and gates were very nice, but I was really taken with the colorful Yokohama Ma Zu Miao temple. I definitely need to return soon.

建物と門の中国っぽい外見はとてもよかったけれど、色とりどりの横濱媽祖廟がとても気にいりました。絶対にすぐに戻りたいです。
