June 2021 – A Park, a Parking Lot, and a Puzzle

This month I visited the most boring park in Tokyo and got frustrated with a puzzle.

今月、東京の一番つまらない公園を訪ねて、パズルにヘロヘロにされました。

Zenpukuji Park

Throughout the pandemic, I have sought the safest ways to get out of my apartment, which means that I have exhausted all the nearby parks and shrines. After desperately scanning Google Maps, I managed to find a park with two shrines I had not yet seen about twenty minutes west of Nakano.

パンデミック中、アパートから出かける1番安全な方法を探していました。だからアパートに近い公園と神社に出尽くしました。グーグルマップで必死に研究してから、中野の西に二十分位の行ったことがない神社が二つがある公園を見つけました。

The day was muggy, the walk from the station was long, and I was rewarded with a park that contained a single statue and a featureless, large pond with ubiquitous swan paddle boats. Despite 20 minutes of searching and pin-point directions from my smartphone, I could not locate the southernmost shrine. Mosquitoes started to bite and shadows began to grow long, so I gave up and searched for the northern shrine. This turned out to be a single, small stone building on a tiny island entirely surrounded by a moat. The island contained so many trees that there was basically a single photo opportunity, straight on to the front of the shrine.

その日は蒸し暑くて、駅から歩くのが長くて、銅像が一つしかない普遍的なスワンの船がある大きくてつまらない池がある公園を見ました。二十分探して詳しいスマホから道順があるのに、南の神社が見つけられませんでした。蚊に刺され始めて、影が長く成ったから、あきらめて北の神社に行きました。これは堀に取り巻かれていたちっちゃい島にある一つの小さな石の建物でした。神社の　正面まっすぐ前　からしか写真をとる機会がないくらい島に木が沢山ありすぎました。

Disappointed by these dull trappings, I redoubled my efforts to find the first shrine. It turned out to be a tiny pile of stones behind a miniature torii gate completely enclosed by an apartment building parking lot. I can’t figure out why Google Maps would even have bothered to list it.

このつまらない景色にがっかりしてから、もう一回始めの神社を探しました。それは、アパートの駐車場に取り巻かれている小さい鳥居の裏の小型の石の山でした。どうしてグーグルマップが目録をしたのかわかりません。

Spirited Away 3-D Art

The last time I was in Akihabara, I spotted this cool art kit / jigsaw puzzle from my favorite anime, Spirited Away. I thought it would be an interesting project, but it turned out to be much more of an undertaking than I had bargained for.

前回、秋葉原にいた時「千と千尋の神隠し」という一番好きなアニメのかっこいいアートキット／パズルが目に付きました。面白いプロジェクトだと思ったけど思っていたより大変でした。

The kit was composed of about 16 laser-cut pieces of cardboard that, when assembled and glued properly, would show a multi-layered, 3-D scene from the movie. The cuts were so fine that clumsy assembly would obscure tiny details. For example, the girl’s hair had to be placed on her head in such a way that small blue and white strips would show through as her hair band and pupils.

キットはレーザ切断をされた厚紙が十六枚でした。正しく集めて付けると複層の3-Dの映画のシーンが見られます。下手に付けたら詳細を暈すくらい切断は細かかったです。例えば、小さい青と白の細長い紙を髪のバンドとして見られるくらいに女の子の頭に置くはずでした。

Completing the layers was difficult, but assembling them into the frame was nearly impossible. Without glue, the previously-placed layers kept falling out as I added new ones. With glue, I had to bend the layers to a dangerous degree to make them fit. In the end, I succeeded with only minor errors and the confidence that I will never build another one of these.

層の完成はしにくかったけれど、枠に付けるのはほとんど不可能　でした。のりなしで次の層を置くと、前に置いた層はいつも転びました。のりと付けるために層を危なっかしく折らなくちゃいけませんでした。ついに　小さい／ちょっとした　ミスと、もう他のはまた作らないという思いで完成しました。

Stitch Binding

I always wanted to try stitch-binding a book, and I had a chance with this self-printed copy of the solo RPG “Four Against Darkness.” The binding came out pretty well and the game was fairly fun.

ステッチ製本を作りたくて、この自分でプリントした「Four Against Darkness」というソロRPGはその機会となりました。ステッチ製本はまあまあよかったし、ゲームもそこそこ楽しかったです。
