November 2021 – Lost in Consternation

You won’t hear this often from me, but this month’s blog post is actually worth reading. I have some neat photos if you like fancy hotels and face masks.

New York Bar and Grill

For my birthday, I accomplished a long-held goal of dining at the New York Bar and Grill in the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel, which was featured in one of my favorite movies, “Lost in Translation.” Released a year after my first trip to Japan, this movie very effectively portrays the feeling of confusion, over-stimulation, and jetlag that I experienced on every trip to Japan. Before I moved here, watching it made me feel weirdly “homesick” for what would only years later actually become my home.

誕生日に「Lost in Translation」という大好きな映画に出てくる「Park Hyatt Tokyo」というホテルの「New York Bar and Grill」というレストランで食事をするという以前からの目標を果たしました。この映画は初めての日本の旅行の一年間後に公表されました。日本の旅行の混乱の感じと時差ボケと過剰刺激をよく伝えてくれます。日本に引っ越す前によく見たら郷愁に駆られるほどでした。

The hotel, bar, and restaurant are very luxurious and I did not feel very comfortable, being more used to manga cafes and sushi-go-rounds. But the food and music were excellent and the trip was worth taking… once.

ホテルとバーとレストランはとても豪華で、自分はマンガ喫茶や回転寿司に慣れているから気楽ではありませんでした。でも食べ物と音楽は素晴らしくて一回行ってみる価値があります。

Looking like a tourist, I took as many photos as I could, hoping to match them to scenes from the movie. Let’s see how I did below.

観光客みたく映画のシーンと同じ写真を撮るために、なるべくたくさんの写真を撮りました。下の写真をどう思いますか？

Tokyo Design Festa Fall 2021

Tokyo has just begun to wake up from the pandemic and the geek-related events have begun to happen again. Attendance at Tokyo Design Festa was low and maskless photo opportunities were impossible, but even this pale imitation of normality was a welcome respite from the past two years.

東京はパンデミックから回復し始めて、オタクのイベントも開き始めました。東京のデザインフェスタの出席者がおおくなくてマスクなしの写真が無理だったけれど、このようなイベントは前の二年間に比べてよかったです。

I also attended my favorite comic book show, Cometia, but there weren’t really any good photo spots at that show. Covid-related difficulties made the entrance line for the Tokyo Game Market too long and I abandoned my plan to attend that board-game show.

「コメティア」という一番好きな漫画のイベントに出席してみましたが、あまりいい写真がありません。コロナ関係の問題で「東京ゲームマケット」というボードゲームのイベントの入口の行列が長すぎたから入りませんでした。
