May 2025 – Nagoya

This month I took a trip to the fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya, to find out why nobody goes there.

今月、名古屋という日本の四番目に大きい町に旅行をしました。なぜ誰も行かないのかを確かめるために。

Nagoya

For Golden Week, I wanted to travel somewhere inexpensive and that was not overrun by foreign and domestic tourists. Even though it is a large city, Nagoya is ignored by travelers to the point that it is a bit of a joke. But I found enough interesting sites to justify at least one short trip.

ゴールデンウィークには、安くて外国人観光客と日本人旅行者で混んでいない所に行きたいと思っていました。大きい町なのに、名古屋は冗談のように観光客が軽視しています。でも、短い旅行なら十分楽しめる場所がいくつか見つかり、旅行の甲斐がありました。

Downtown Nagoya

My hotel was on a main street in downtown Nagoya and my room’s view was pretty awesome. Some of the neighboring buildings have great architecture. The adjacent department store featured a giant mannequin that was currently advertising something called “The Nagoya Poop Museum.”

ホテルは名古屋の町中の大通り沿いにあって、部屋からの眺めは素敵でした。近くの建物の建築も良かったです。隣のデパートには巨大なマネキンがいて、「名古屋うんこミュージアム」なるもの広告をしていました。

No, we are not going to the poop museum. We have many cultural sites to see.

ダメだよ。うんこミュージアムに行かないよ！今日は文化的な所をたくさん見に行くんだからね。

Midland Square

The ninth tallest building in Japan, Midland Square features an open-air observation deck on the 44th floor. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day I visited, so my photos are unimpressive. The glass elevator up was a real challenge for acrophobics.

ミッドランドスクエアと言う日本の九番目に高い建物には44階に屋外展望台があります。残念なごとに私が行った日は雨で、写真はあまり映えませんでした。ガラス張りのエレベーターは高所恐怖症には大変です。

I said, “no!” We are not going to the poop museum. Settle down back there.

行かないって言ったでしょ！うんこミュージアムはナシ！後ろでおとなしくしていなさい！

Nagoya Castle

Although a replica, Nagoya Castle is an impressive site. Entrance into the tall, white keep was prohibited, but the palace was open and featured some great art on its doors, walls, and ceiling.

復元品だけれど名古屋城はとても見ごたえがありました。白くて高い天守は立ち入り禁止だったけれど、御殿は入れて、戸や壁や天井には素晴らしい芸術が施されてありました。

What did I say? No! We have better things to do than go to the poop museum.

何て言った？ダメ！うんこミュージアムより、もっといい事をする予定なんだから！

Inuyama Castle

An hour train ride from Nagoya, and at the end of a long, uphill walk, lies Inuyama Castle. Unlike most castles in Japan, this wooden keep has been intact since 1580! Although small in comparison, its age and its nearby shrine made it well worth visiting.

名古屋から電車で1時間、さらに長い上り坂を歩いたところに犬山城があります。日本の他の多くの城と違い、この木造の天守は1580年から現存しています！小さくても、その歴史と隣の神社は訪ねた甲斐がありました。

What do you mean you’d rather see the poop museum?! You kids today.

「うんこミュージアムのほうが見たい」ってどういう意味だよ？今の子供はほんとにもう…。

Osu Temple

The impressive Osu Temple sits at the start of an impressively long set of shopping streets that run further than I was willing to walk.

大須観音は、びっくりするほど長い商店街の入り口にあります。

Sigh. OK, fine! We’ll go to the poop museum.

はぁ…しょうがない！じゃあ、うんこミュージアムに行こう。

Nagoya Poop Museum

This was awful. Situated in a mall on the bay, this “museum” is really just a tiny amusement park for children. The staff were annoyingly friendly, the “exhibits” were neon atrocities, and oh my god the noise. One game demanded that participants scream to make the video game characters move. The shrieks of 5-year olds bounced off the drywall in a cacophony that can only be described as demonic. I couldn’t get out fast enough. The gift shop was a bit amusing, however.

最悪でした。湾沿いのショッピングモールにあるこの「ミュージアム」は、実は子供向けの小さい遊園地のようでした。スタッフは妙に元気すぎるし「展示」はネオンだらけの悪趣味で、何よりうるさい。あるゲームは、プレイヤーがキャラクターを移動をさせるために叫ばなければならず、五歳児たちの絶叫は石こうボードの壁に反響して、まるで地獄のような騒音になっていました。とにかく早く出たくてたまりませんでした。まぁ、ギフトショップはちょっと面白かったですけどね。

Kagurazaka

Voted as one of the coolest streets in the world, I enjoyed some excellent spring weather by strolling around Kagurazaka street. I was not overly impressed. If you like expensive French and Italian restaurants, then it might be a place for you. But I found a French bakery with some excellent bread, a couple of interesting shrines, and a bit of cool art.

世界で最もかっこいい通りの1つに選ばれた神楽坂で、散歩して春の陽気を楽しみました。でも、正直そこまで感動はしませんでした。高級なフランス料理やイタリア料理のレストランが好きだったらいいかもしれません。とはいえ、面白い神社2つと美味しいフランスのパン屋を見つけて、少しカッコいい芸術っぽい雰囲気も味わえました。
