November 2023 – Tokyo Design Festa Fall and Kyoto 2023

This month is a bonanza of photos from Tokyo Design Festa and a trip to Kyoto.

今月は東京デザインフェスタと京都の旅行の写真がたくさんあります。

Tokyo Design Festa Fall 2023

Although it is still my favorite event in Japan, Tokyo Design Festa has been slowly slipping away from illustration, performance, and weirdness into clothing, accessories, and arts and crafts for many years. So much so that I found myself coming home nearly empty handed from the post-pandemic shows.

今だにまだ一番好きな日本のイベントだけれれど、東京デザインフェスタは徐々に展示品をイラストや演技や風変りな物から服や装身具や美術工芸に変更していました。パンデミック後の展覧会ではほとんど買わなかったほどでした。

This time, however, I found a bunch of cool postcards, stickers, and a deck of cards illustrated with both traditional trump suits and Japanese Hanafuda designs.

ところが、今回かっこいい葉書とシールと花札の印を描いたトランプを見つけました。

Kyoto 2023

With foreign tourism at a record high and a Japanese national holiday bringing out domestic sight-seeers, Kyoto’s most popular attractions were crowded like Tokyo train stations at rush hour the week that I visited.

自分が行った週は記録に残るぐらい外国人観光客が多くて祝日だから日本人の観光客も来ていて京都の一番人気がある場所はラッシュアワーの東京の駅くらい込んでいました。

Still, I found a number of beautiful locations I missed on previous outings which made navigating the crowds worth it.

でも以前には見たことがない美しい所を見つけたから行った甲斐がありました。

Ryouan-ji

I started off my trip at my favorite temple, Ryouan-ji, which is famous for its rock garden and for being featured on the front page of my website. Bradblog readers have seen photos of this site before, so below is a hopefully pleasant rerun.

初めて枯山水がある竜安寺という私のホームページで見られる有名で一番好きなお寺に行きました。Bradblogの読者はそのお寺の写真が見たことがあるけれど下の再放送が面白いといいんですが。

Iwashimizu Hachimangu

Located a short cable-car ride up a hill, this shrine was just far enough off the beaten path to miss the unwashed hordes this week. The location features a really nice view of Kyoto from above.

坂の上に短いケーブルカーの乗り場がある石清水八幡宮は今週観光客が来なかったくらい人気がありません。上に京都の素敵な景色があります。

Byoudou-in

Byoudou-in and its Phoenix Hall are so beautiful that they are featured on both the 10 yen coin and the ten-thousand yen note. We were not allowed to take photos of the giant Buddha statue inside, so I am borrowing a shot from the brochure below.

平等院と鳳凰堂は10円だまと一万札に印刷されるほど美しいです。室内では大仏の撮影が禁止だから下にパンフレットの写真を載せています。

Himeji Castle

Also known as the White Heron Castle, Himeji Castle is the largest castle I have seen in Japan. Not only is it six floors tall, but its walls connect over 80 other rooms. The stone walls and surrounding gardens were really impressive as well.

白鷺城という姫路城は見たことのある中で一番大きい日本の城です。六階まである高さだけでなく壁は80室以上を接続しています。石垣と周りの庭も素晴らしかったです。

Fushimi Inari-taisha

This shrine is famous for its 10,000 torii gates that form a path up the adjacent mountain, leading to many smaller shrines. The shrine’s theme is “kitsune,” meaning a fox from Japanese folklore, statues of which can be seen everywhere.

この神社は多くの小さい神社に通じている隣の山への道に作られている万基の鳥居で有名です。テーマは狐で狐の像はどこでも見られます。

Tofukuji Temple

My last stop was at Tofukuji Temple and its giant wood buildings. The temple’s garden is said to have the best fall foliage in Japan, meaning I had to suffer the hoard down and up the ravine just to get photos for Mom.

最後の訪問地は東福寺の大きい木造建築でした。庭では日本の一番素敵な紅葉が見られると言われています。だから混んでいたのにお母さんのためにその写真を撮ろうと峡谷を上り下りしなくちゃいけませんでした。
