May 2023 – Osaka and Art

May was a busy month, which means this post contains photos from my Golden Week trip to Osaka and more art than you can shake a stick at.

五月は忙しかったから、この更新はゴールデンウイークの大阪の旅行の写真と芸術の写真をたくさん含んでいます。

Osaka 2023

I took my second trip to Osaka and spent most of my time wandering around the southern part of the city.

二度目に大阪へ行って南側を訪ねました。

Dotonbori River Cruise

Dotonbori is a famous strip of restaurants along the Donbori River. Four years ago (http://bradweier.com/bradblog2/2019/12/november-2018-getting-old-in-osaka/) I walked around during the daytime. This trip, I visited during the evening for a river cruise at a little night photography.

道頓堀は道頓堀川の隣の有名な書店街です。四年前(http://bradweier.com/bradblog2/2019/12/november-2018-getting-old-in-osaka/)、日中に散策しました。今回はリバークルーズと夜間撮影のために夕方に訪ねました。

Osaka Tenmangu

Osaka Tenmangu is a nice shrine in the middle of Osaka. It always feels strange to walk off of a noisy, downtown city block into the serenity of old wooden buildings and trees.

大阪天満宮は大阪の真ん中にあるきれいな神社です。にぎやかな町の通りから、古い木造の建物と樹木の静寂さに遭遇する事をいつも不思議に感じます。

Dotonbori Art Street

On the river cruise, I spotted Dotonbori Art Street, a wall of murals painted by various artists. Here are some of my favorites.

リバークルーズの時に、道頓堀のアートストリートと言う色々の芸術家に描かれた壁画に気付きました。下に好きな絵の写真があります。

Abenu Harukas

Abenu Harukas is the second tallest building in Japan. I went up to the 60th floor observatory to struggle with vertigo and get some photos. I decided not to climb the outside scaffolding to access the open rooftop.

あべのハルカスは日本の二番目に高い建物です。目眩に苦しみながらも写真を撮るために六十階の展望台に上がりました。オープンな屋上に行くために屋外階段を登ることはしませんでした。

Abenu Harukas Art Museum

Inside the skyscraper is a small but nice art museum. This month, they featured art by Ekin, who was famous for painting lanterns and wood boards with advertising for kabuki plays. These were kind of like movie posters for the 19th century. Unusually, we were allowed to take photos of some of the work.

あべのハルカスの中に小さいけれどよい芸術館があります。今月は提灯と木板に歌舞伎の広告の絵を描くのに有名な絵金の芸術作品を陳列していました。これは19世紀の江戸時代の映画のポスターだそうです。めずらしく、芸術作品のいくつかは写真を撮ることができました。

Shinsekai

Shinsekai is a shopping district surrounding another famous Osaka tower, Tsutenkaku. Both the interiors and exteriors of the shops and restaurants have been preserved from the 1980’s, making it feel a bit like I’d stepped into a time warp. I was too exhausted to deal with going up a second tower, but I managed to take a lot of photos nearby.

新世界は通天閣という他の有名なタワーで囲まれている商店街です。店とレストランの内部と外部装飾は八十年代から残っているから、過去に行く感じがありました。二つ目のタワーに上がれないくらい疲れていたけれど、近辺の写真がたくさん撮れました。

Tokyo Design Festa Spring 2023

The semiannual Tokyo Design Festa continued its very long metamorphosis from an avantgarde visual and performing arts festival into an arts and crafts marketplace.But there are still pockets of weirdness to be found, making it worth attending regardless of the change.

毎年二回の東京デザインフェスタはアバンギャルドの視覚芸術と舞台芸術のフェスタから美術工芸のマーケットへと変身を続けています。でも可笑しい物が少し見つけられるから、変更に関わらず行く価値があります。

Roppongi Art Night 2023

I learned about this weekend-long art festival in one of Tokyo’s most popular entertainment districts the day before it occurred. Thus, I couldn’t do the necessary planning to take advantage of all the design exhibits and performances scattered throughout the unfamiliar area. Still, I saw a few interesting exhibits, ending in a music and dance performance of actors on stilts.

開催の一日前に、東京の一番人気の歓楽街で週末続く芸術祭があることがわかりました。だから、よく知らない場所に点在するデザイン展覧会と舞台芸術を上手く楽しむための必要な企画を立てられませんでした。でも竹馬に乗っているパフォーマーの音楽とダンスのステージとか面白い出展を少し見ることができました。
