October 2022 – Zojoji, Nebuta, and Robots

All Japan Model and Hobby Show

Although there have been 59 previous occurrences, I had never heard of the All Japan Model and Hobby Show before this year. Although modest in size, the display of toys, models, and crafting supplies was a welcome show on an otherwise dull weekend. My favorite booth contained wooden models of dozens of Japan’s famous temples and castles.

今まで59回もあったようだけれど、一度も全日本模型ホビーショーを聞いたことがありませんでした。大きくはなかったけれど、玩具とプラモデルとクラフトの道具の展示は何もやることのない週末には良かったです。一番好きなブースには木製の日本の有名なお寺と城のプラモデルが数十ありました。

Yokohama Gundam

The rain defeated me last month, but I made a triumphant return to Yokohama to see its giant Gundam robot. The cafe and store were underwhelming. But the Gundam moved more than I expected, being able to kneel and to point above its head. The museum dedicated to the building of the Gundam and its scaffolding was very cool, especially the time-lapse video of its assembly.

先月は雨に負けたけれど、今回こそ大きいガンダムのロボットを見るために横浜に戻りました。カフェと店はいまひとつでした。でもガンダムは予想以上に動いて、ひざまずけて、頭の上を指せます。ガンダムとその野外組み立てに特化した博物館は素晴らしくて、組付ける速度撮影映像が面白かったですｌ

Sumida Street Jazz Festival

The Sumida Street Jazz Festival is a surprisingly large music festival featuring more than 20 indoor and outdoor stages and an Octoberfest. The atmosphere in the park surrounding the main stage was chill and relaxed. I allotted only a little time to the event, but was jealous of the in-the-know folks who brought portable chairs and tents. Camping out and listening to live jazz is an excellent way to spend a day.

すみだストリートジャズフェスティバルは二十以上の屋内外のステージがあるびっくりするほど大きい10月の祭りです。メインステージを巡らす公園のふいんきはとてもかっこよくてのんびりできました。時間をあまり割かなかったけれど、携帯椅子とテントを持ってきていたイベントをよく知っている人達が羨ましかったです。キャンプしながらライブジャズを聴くのはいい日を過ごす方法です。

Zojoji

With Tokyo Tower in the background, the Zojoji temple is a perfect subject for photography. Like most temples in Tokyo, the original buildings were destroyed by fire. However, the main gate survived and is the oldest wooden building in Tokyo, having been built in 1622.

東京タワーが後ろに見える増上寺は、完璧な撮影の被写体です。ほとんどの東京のお寺と同じように本当の建物は火災で壊されました。でも1622年に建てられた三解脱門は焼け残っていて東京の一番古い木造建築です。

Anna Sato Concert

Anna Sato is a Japanese singer who studied at my first English conversation school. When I met her, she had produced several pop music CDs. Over the years, however, she shifted focus into Japanese folk music. Her latest album is a duet with a jazz drummer, combining her powerful voice, traditional Japanese string instruments, and intricate drumming.

I had long wanted to see her live and finally had a good opportunity in Kawasaki this month. The venue was the epitome of “cool bar,” being impressively decorated with jazz and soul music-related murals. The music was skillful, interesting, and not quite like anything I have heard before. This was the coolest event I have attended in years. (If you are interested, check out her Youtube channel.)

里アンナは私が初めて勤めた英会話学校で勉強していた日本の歌手です。会った時J-POPのCDを作っていました。それから島唄の専門に移行をしました。最近のアルバムは、彼女の強い声と伝統的な弦楽器と上手なドラムの組み合わせのジャズドラマーとのデュエットです。

長い間ライブを見たくて川崎で今月にいいチャンスがありました。場所は素晴らしいジャズとソウル音の関連壁画で飾り付けられたとてもかっこいバーでした。音楽は上手で面白くて聴いたことがある音楽とは違っていました。ここ数年間で一番かっこいいイベントでした。（興味があったらYoutubeのチャネルを見てください。）

Game Market Fall 2022

I attended the second Game Market this year mostly to reunite with some friends I had not seen since the beginning of the pandemic, but was pleasantly surprised at the health of the show. (Covid restrictions prevented me from attending this year’s previous show.) Game companies were plentiful and the event was very well attended. I never get to play in-person board and card games these days, so perusing the hundreds of new offerings was a little bittersweet.

パンデミック中に会わなかった友達に会うために今年の二回目のゲームマーケットに行ったけれど、マーケットの状況が意外に良かったです。（コロナの制限のせいで今年の一つ目のマーケットに行きませんでした。）ゲーム会社が沢山来ていて参列者がいっぱいでした。この頃、直接にボードゲームとカードゲームをぜんぜんしないので沢山の新しいゲームを見るのはほろ苦かったです。

Nakano Nebuta Festival

My town held a benefit festival for the northernmost prefecture of Japan’s main island, Touhoku. This is the prefecture that was severely damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Touhoku is also home to the Nebuta festival, which is famous for its parade of lantern floats. One of these days I’d like to see the real deal, but this event was a nice taste. Unfortunately, I was busy when the lanterns were lit up in the evening. Still, I was able to hear a lot of Japanese drumming and see some traditional dancing.

私の町が東北地方の応援でねぶた祭を起こしました。2011年に地震と津波で被害をこおむった県です。そして東北地方には提灯山車の行進がある有名なねぶた祭があります。いつの日か本物が見たいけれどこのイベントはいい見本でした。残念なことに夕方に提灯を点けている時は忙しかったです。それでも、太鼓をたくさん聴けて伝統舞踊を見られました。
