Hindsight is 20/20

I had a lovely week off in the middle of the month. I mostly just relaxed. During the week, I had to get an eye exam in order to renew my U.S. driver’s license by mail. I found an eye clinic that advertised exams in English. However, the majority of the exam was performed by a nice woman who did not speak any English to me. When I saw the doctor for 90 seconds, I think he said two English sentences to me.

月の半ばに素敵な一週間の休みがありました。ほとんどのんびりしました。その休暇中に、郵送によるアメリカの運転免許証の更新のために視力検査を受けなくちゃいけませんでした。英語で検査できる眼科クリニックを見つけました。でも運転免許証用の検査をする親切な女の人は英語をぜんぜん話しませんでした。そして、医者に相談をする九十秒間中、彼は英語の文を二つしか言わなかったと思います。

But when I left, the doctor’s assistant, whose job was to clean the measuring equipment with a little alcohol pad after every use, thanked me in beautiful, California-accented English. I stopped to compliment her and learned that she had studied on the west coast and was very fluent. Why didn’t she perform my exam?! We will never know.

出る時、小さいアルコール綿で計測の装置を掃除する仕事の医者の助手はカリフォルニアのアクセントの英語で感謝の意を示しました。私がその英語を褒めると、彼女はペラペラでウエストコーストで勉強したことがわかりました。どうして視力検査を英語でしませんでしたか？ぜんぜんわかりません。
