This month I headed down to steamy Nagasaki then to the steamy Makuhari Messe convention center for Tokyo Game Show.
今月、蒸し暑い南の長崎に行って、それから東京ゲームショーを見に蒸し暑い幕張メッセに行きました。
Nagasaki
Nagasaki is a port city on the southern island of Kyushu. It is famous for remaining open to trade during the isolationist 1700’s and for being the second atomic bomb target.
長崎は九州と言う南の島の港町です。鎖国の1700年代に国際貿易が続いていたことと二つ目の原爆の標的だったことで有名です。
Hashima
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or “Battleship Island” is a 16-acre island which hosted a coal mine and small city that was abandoned in the 1970’s. At its apex, the town housed 5,000 people with facilities like a hospital, swimming pool, and pachinko parlor.
端島（軍艦島）は1970年代に見捨てられた炭鉱と小さい町がある16エーカーの島です。絶頂期には五千人が住んでいて病院やプールやパチンコがありました。
The island is accessible only by boat on a guided tour. These days, you can only visit narrow walkways on the island’s southern edge. The whole area seemed like a post-apocalyptic video game.
島には船と観光ガイド付きツアーだけで行けます。最近では南の端の狭い歩道だけ歩けます。全体的にテレビゲームの世紀末みたいです。
Inasa
The top of Mt. Inasa, accessible by a cable gondola, features an amazing view of the city and its unique mountain-side tiered architecture.
長崎ロープウェイで行ける稲佐山の山頂からは、町全体と山腹の斜面に広がる段々状の建築の素敵な景色を見渡すことができます。
Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park
Nagasaki’s Atomic Bomb Museum is a sobering reminder of the devastation of nuclear weapons. The museum’s mascot, the origami paper crane, can be found in abundance throughout the surrounding grounds.
長崎原爆資料館は、原爆の破壊を思い起こさせる胸の痛むような場所です。どこにでも折り鶴の博物館のマスコットがたくさん見られます。
The Hypocenter marks the exact position of the bomb strike and features a surviving section of a church’s stone arch.
爆心地は正確な原爆が落ちた地点を告げていて、時を越えて今も残る教会の石のアーチの一部があります。
The Peace Park houses a number of sculptures, the largest of which is a seated man pointing to the sky to warn us of danger and gesturing to the surrounding area which we should protect. I found a sculpture of a young girl, who appears to be hiding from one angle, but to be reaching for a bird from another, to be a more effective expression of the park’s purpose.
平和公園には像が沢山あって、一番大きいのは、危ないと注意するために空を指して、守るべき近所に手を広げる身振りをしている座っている男の人の像です。私には、一方向から見ると身を隠していそうで、他方向からは鳥へ手を伸ばしている若い女の人の像のほうが、公園の目的をよく表していると思います。
Sofukuji
The Sofukuji temple is a Buddhist temple built by a Chinese monk in the 1600’s.This explains the Chinese architecture. The day I visited a gentle rain combined with a chanting ceremony to create a uniquely Japanese atmosphere.
崇福寺は1600年代に中国の僧侶に建てれられた仏教寺院です。だから中国の建築があります。訪ねた日に春雨が降っていて、吟唱の儀式と重なって雰囲気は日本ぽかったです。
Tokyo Game Show
Last year, I foolishly procrastinated buying tickets for this giant video game convention and missed out. I was more careful this year and had a great time roaming the sensory overload.
去年、このテレビゲームの大きいイベントのチケットを買うのをばかみたいに先延ばしにしたから、買いそびれて行けませんでした。今年はより気を付けて準備し、あふれる刺激の中を散歩して楽しみました。
