This month I have a bunch of photos from three Tokyo shrines.
今月、東京の3つの神社の写真がたくさんあります。
Toyokawa Inari Betsuin
Although a bit cramped and crowded, this shrine displays 100’s of fox statues in the shadows of neighboring skyscrapers.
少し狭くて混んでいても、この神社には周囲の高層ビルの影の中に狐の像が何百もあります。
Nogi Shrine
This shrine is the site where a famous general and his wife killed themselves in the early 1900’s. Now it is a small, sedate resting stop in the heart of Tokyo.
この神社で1900年代初頭に有名な将軍とその妻が自殺をしました。今は東京の真ん中の小さくて休憩場所です。
Akasaka Hikawa Shrine
The former personal shrine of a shogun in 1700’s, it is now the home to some of the coolest guardian lion-dog (“komainu”) statues I’ve seen. It is also the place where I took one of my most Japanese photos ever, complete with a komainu, a torii gate, stone lantern, and red wood bridge.
1700年代の将軍の自家用神社だったけれど、今では私がこれまで見た中で一番面白い狛犬がある神社です。そしてこれまで撮った中で一番日本っぽい写真を撮りました。狛犬と鳥居と石灯籠と赤い太鼓橋がそろっています。
Anna Sato and Toshiyuki Sasaki
I had a chance to see the folk/jazz duo of Anna Sato and Toshiyuki Sasaki again in nearby Kichjouji. Unfortunately, my seat was behind a steel staircase. I could only see the performance by either leaning back to look down the stairs or by looking through the gaps between the steps. The music was good, though.
近くの吉祥寺で、里アンナさんと佐々木俊之さんの島唄とジャズを融合させたデュオを再び見るチャンスがありました。 残念なことに、私の席は金属製の階段の後ろにありました。演奏を見るために、ふんぞり返って階段の下を覗きこむか、階段のすき間から見なくちゃいけませんでした。でも音楽は良かったです。
