July 2023 – Statues, Heights, Music, and Toys

In spite of a blistering heat wave, I defied the sun, darting from shadow to shadow, to do some sightseeing. I present here the photos I managed to coax out of my overheating camera.

大変な猛暑なのにお日様に逆らって端から端まで走って観光をしました。これは過熱したカメラで撮った写真です。

Kamakura

Almost exactly 20 years ago, I visited Kamakura with some of my best friends to attend a wedding. An hour south of Tokyo, Kamakura is a small town that walks a delicate line between “quaint” and “touristy.” It is famous for its beach on the Sagami Bay, numerous temples and shrines, diverse shopping district, and, of course, a giant buddha statue. For no good reason, I had not returned since 2003. I took the opportunity of a day off to revisit a couple of places I have already seen and to explore some new places. The blazing sun cut my trip short, but I managed to have fun all morning

ほぼ正確に20年前、結婚式を見るために親友と鎌倉を訪ねました。東京の南に一時間の鎌倉は古風で趣があり観光客に人気がある小さい町です。相模湾の海岸と数々の神社やお寺と商店街ともちろん大きい仏像は有名です。特に理由はないけれど2003年以来久しぶりでした。休暇だったからもう一回見たことある所と見たことがない所を見に行きました。焼けつくような太陽で早く帰りすぎましたが、午前中ずっと楽しむことができました。

Buddha at Kotoku-in

I began my visit at the giant buddha statue. I wanted to get some photos using a newer camera. I was surprised how accurate my memory of this temple was. (The complete opposite case from the shrine later in the day.)

最初に大仏を見に行きました。もっと新しいカメラで写真を撮りたかったです。自分が驚くほどこのお寺を正確に覚えていたことに驚きました。（その日の後半の神社は正反対でした。）

Hase-dera Temple

I did not visit this temple during my last trip nor did I plan to this time as I only learned about it when I spotted the gate on the walk back to the station from the Buddha statue. I’m glad I did, though, because the temple grounds held an impressive garden, a replica cave, and a nice museum. (That the museum’s air conditioning was set to “arctic” was a blessing.)

このお寺は、大仏から駅まで歩いていた間に初めて目に入ったから、前の旅行の時も見ていなくて、今回見る計画も立てていませんでした。お寺の所には面白い庭とレプリカの空洞といい芸術館があったから見てよかったです。（芸術館のエアコンは極寒に設定されていて素晴らしかったです。）

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

I finished my trip at the shrine where I saw the wedding so many years ago. I was baffled at how much smaller I remember the shrine being. It had a giant stone staircase with a large temple that I was sure I had not seen before. Later, when I compared my experience with my old photos, I realized that the shrine was under construction two decades ago and much of it was inaccessible. The sun was at its highest point during my visit, so I only stayed a few minutes. I plan on returning when the weather cools, as Kamakura has many more sights to offer.

結婚式を見た神社で旅行が終わりました。混乱するほど本物のほうが思い出より大きかったです。見たことがない大きい石の階段と大きいお寺がありました。後で20年前の古い写真でその時の体験を比べた時、当時は神社の建設で見られない所がたくさんあったことがわかりました。今回の訪問時は天気が一番暑かったから十分以上滞在をしませんでした。もっと観光をしたいから天気が涼しくなった時戻る予定にします。

Connect Game Market

The Connect game market is a new board game and card game show with the same humble beginning as the large Tokyo Game Market. The show was not big enough to produce interesting photos, but I enjoyed seeing the first episode in what will probably be a long story. A friend gave a presentation as well, and I resisted the urge to heckle.

大規模な東京ゲームマーケットの謙虚な始まりがある「Connect」というゲームマーケットは新しいボードゲームとカードゲームのイベントです。面白い写真を撮れるほど大きくなかったけれどイベントの最初の回を見て楽しみました。友達が発表も行って私は野次を飛ばすのを抑えました。

Shibuya Sky

Shibuya Sky is an outdoor observation deck on the roof of the 47-floor Shibuya Scramble Square building. Not only did the sun keep my visit short, but it also ruined many photos with its glare across the protective glass.

Shibuya Skyは渋谷スクランブルスクエアの47階の屋上の野外展望台です。太陽のせいで滞在が短くなっただけでなく、保護ガラスの照り返しが写真をたくさん無駄にしました。

Shibuya Hikarie

Shibuya Hikarie is a department store next to Shibuya Sky. I did not go there to shop, though. I went to see the set of art galleries on the eighth floor, which were surprisingly interesting given the surroundings.

渋谷ヒカリエはShibuya Skyの隣のデパートです。買い物をしに行かなかったけれどデパートの中にあるのに面白い8階のアートギャラリーを見に行きました。

Naikakunowa reunion concert

Kazumi Suzuki’s band, Naikakunowa, made a triumphant return to the stage this month. They had not performed in over ten years, but you would not know that from this performance of intricate progressive rock. I hope I do not have to wait as long for the next show.

今月内核の波と言う鈴木和美さんのバンドは凄い復活記念ライブをしました。10年以上出演をしなかったけれど複雑なプログレッシブロックの出演を見るとそれがわかりません。次のショーまでそのような長い間待たなくていいとよいです。

Wonder Festival

My final sun-defying trip was out to Chiba for Wonder Festival. This giant event features the coolest figures and dioramas I have ever seen. Its cosplay is fantastic as well, but the heat kept me and my camera away from the outdoor costume area for the most part.

後ろのお日様に逆らっている旅行では、千葉にワンダーフェスティバルを見に行きました。この大きいイベントには一番かっこいいフィギュアとジオラマがあります。コスプレも素晴らしいけれど、暑かったからカメラ持ちの私は外のコスプレエリアをほとんど避けました。

Brad’s Gaming Cavalcade

I even managed a board game day this month. Take that, sun.

Don’t Let It Die – a cooperative game of primitive humans trying to keep a fire alive. We didn’t, and we died very quickly.
VIllagers – a set-building card game that requires a lot of knowledge about the deck before you can play well.
Some indie rpg whose name I can’t remember – It was cute and came inside of an old-style cassette tape case.
Cartographers – One of the better roll-and-write games.
Hegemonia – A set collecting game where your pieces get pushed everywhere except where you want.
My City – I got to play this new Knizia classic on Tabletop Simulator, which is my second favorite way to play board games.
