May turned out to be a really fun month, full of games, art, and people beating other people up.
五月は楽しい月になりました。 たくさんのゲームとアートと互いに戦っている人がたくさんいました。
Kirapro Wrestling
Although nowhere near the heights it reached in the 80’s, professional wrestling is alive and well in this century, especially in the form of small, independent organizations. I went to Itabashi to check out one such group, Kirapro. Although small, the crowd was enthusiastic and the performers put on quite a good show. Taking photos at these kinds of events is really fun.
八十年代のレベルより人気は高くはないけれどプロレスは今世紀にも生き残っていてたくさんあります。 特に小さい独立したプロレスの組織にです。 板橋にキラプロというそのようなグループを見に行きました。 小さいだけど観客が熱烈で、パフォーマーがうまくやりました。このようなイベントでの撮影が楽しいです。
Tokyo Design Festa Spring 2019
Anyone who read my old Japan blog knows that Tokyo Design Festa is one of my favorite art shows in Japan. For my taste, the show’s focus has shifted too far away from avant-garde performance and illustration and too much toward arts and crafts. Still, there is about a days’ worth of entertaining stuff to see there.
古いブログを読んだことがある人は東京デザインフェスタが私の一番好きな日本の展覧会だと知っていると思います。私の趣向はアバンギャルドパフォーマンスとイラストから美術工芸まで広がりすぎました。 でもまだそこで一日中かけて楽しむ価値があります。
Kanda Festival
In the middle of the month, I attended a fairly large festival in Kanda, next door to the geek haven called Akihabara. The festival had the typical food, music, and portable shrines seen at other festivals. What set this even apart was the parade of samurai on horseback.
月の半ば 秋葉原というオタクの天国のとなりの神田で大きい祭りを見ました。 普通 の祭のように典型的な 食べ物や音楽やお神輿がありました。 特別 だったのは 馬に乗った 侍の行列でした。
Tokyo Game Market Spring 2019
This show has grown considerably in my absence! I attended the first Tokyo Game Market, the only show focused on table-top games in the country, many years ago during my first stay in Japan. At that time, it was held on two floors of a public-use building in Asakusa. Eventually, it grew enough to move to the Tokyo Big Site convention hall. This year, it was half again as large as my memory of the last show. Game companies spent some real money on booths, presentations, and displays and the self-published area seemed to go on forever. Unfortunately, all of the games are in Japanese, so I usually do not buy much at the event. I was content to see just how strong my favorite hobby is becoming here.
アメリカに住んでいる間にこのイベントは大きくなりました。昔々、私の最初の日本の滞在中に初めての唯一のボードゲームとカードゲームに焦点を当てた東京ゲームマーケットが出現しました。 そのころは浅草の公民館の二階を使っていました。 そのうちに東京ビッグサイトに引っ越せるほど大きくなりました。 以前のイベントの思い出と比べて今年のイベントは五十パーセント大きかったです。 ゲームの会社は高いブースや発表や展示が高かったです。同人誌の場所が広かったです。 残念なことにゲームがぜんぶ日本語だから私はあまり買いません。 一番好きな趣味が日本で強くなることを見て嬉しく感じました。
Brad’s Gaming Abodanza
In Okusawa, I taught my old, favorite Bohnanza to some new gamers, as well as my less favorite Guillotine. I learned Tudor, an interesting Euro where the scoring system changes with every game (and with silly, fake hands and plastic rings.) Finally, I gritted my teeth through Salem, a Werewolf-style game, which I despise, because I was being such a good sport. In Kanda, I thought another old favorite, Hey That’s My Fish, and tried a Reiner Knizia classic card game that was new to me, High Society. It is an auction game, no surprise, but with the twist that, if you spend all of your money, you can not win, regardless of the auctions you won. It was quick and interesting.
奥沢で古くて一番好きなBohnanzaとちょっと好きなGuillotineを新しい人に教えました。 TudorというおもしろいEuroを習いました。点のシステムが毎回違います。 そして楽しい眉唾の手とプラのリンがあります。最後にWerewolfっぽいSalemでくるしみました。 神田で古くて好きなHey! That’s My Fish!をしました。 High Societyという私はしたことがなくてReiner Kniziaのクラシックのカードゲームを初めてしました。 もちろんオークションのゲームでもお金を全部使ったら負けます。 速くておもしろかったです。
