Don’t Call It a Comeback
When I left Japan in 2015, I knew I wanted to return, but that I could not go back to teaching. Instead, I had to have a job that 1. Required little Japanese language ability, 2. Would continue my technical writing career, and 3. Had a salary commensurate with my career in the U.S. In other words, I had to find a unicorn.
2015年に日本を去る時、いつかまた日本に戻りたいのというのがわかったけど、もう英会話講師をしたくなかったです。代わりに１．日本語能力がそれほど必要ない ２．今の テクニカルライターのキャリアを続けられる 3. 今と同じ給料の仕事。 つまり、本当に珍しい条件の仕事を見つけなくちゃいけませんでした。
I nearly found such a job in 2016 with Amazon, but, after several interviews, they offered that job to someone else. After that, I did not see a suitable opportunity for another year and a half.
2016年にアマゾンという会社でほとんどそのような条件にあった仕事を見つけたけれど二、三回の面接の後、アマゾンは他の人を採用しました。 その後一年間半、適切な仕事を見かけませんでした。
In August, I was invited to fly to Austin, Texas, the corporate headquarters of Indeed.com, for a job interview for a technical writing position. Indeed is a job search website with offices all over the world. They employ many engineers and produce a lot of internal software and network configurations, all of which require documentation.
八月に Indeed.comという会社の本部があるテキサスのオースチンにテクニカルライターの仕事の面接に飛行機で来るように誘われました。Indeedは世界的な求職活動のウエブサイトです。 技術者をたくさん雇って文書化を必要とする会社内のソフトウェアとネットワーク構成をたくさんうみだしています。
In September, after a nail-biting wait, I was overjoyed to receive a generous offer for the position.
九月にずっと待たされた後、仕事の採用通知をもらって大喜びしました。
The job is kind of a perfect fit for me. Indeed’s Japanese offices use English as their main language, so my lack of fluency is not a factor for success. The documents will be similar to those I have written on other jobs. Finally, my office is in Ebisu, in the heart of Tokyo.
その仕事は私にはまっています。 日本の事務所はほとんど英語を使っているので、私が日本語が下手な事は問題がありません。 この仕事の書類はほかの仕事で私が書いた書類に似ています。 私の事務所は東京の真ん中の恵比寿にあります。
Since then, I completed the long process of applying for a work visa and of packing up all my belongings and storing them at my mom’s house.
その時から取得に手がかかる就労ビザを申し込んで、実家で家財を包んだりして備えました。
I left America on November 24th. My first official day on the job is December 3rd. So, next month I will bring you an update on the job, my apartment hunting, and my return to Japan.
11月24日にアメリカを出発しました。 新しい仕事の初日は十二月三日です。 だから来月、仕事とアパート探しと日本に戻ったことについて書きます。
