This month I got a little taste of Japan and Europe and my nephew won a plush cat.<\/p>\n

A Little Bit of Home at Home<\/h2>\n

My mom took my nephew to a video game arcade called “Round 1” near her and invited me along. As a kid, I loved video game arcades. These days, though, I don’t enjoy them. There are too many driving games, shooting games, and big versions of popular phone games.<\/p>\n

I tagged along anyway and was totally surprised by what I found. First, the place was huge. It took up the entirety of an old Sears department store in the local mall. Second, it looked very similar to the game arcades I used to go to in Tokyo. There were rhythm games, crane games (called “U.F.O. Catchers” in Japan), and some classic fighting games in sit-down cabinets. There were even genuine photo booths (called “Print Club” in Japan)! Oh, and they had coin-collecting games (called “Medal Games” in Japan) as well.<\/p>\n

Many of the games awarded players tickets. You could trade those tickets for prizes in a little store. The store had many goods from Japan, including an entire display of Japanese snacks.<\/p>\n

The biggest difference was that Round 1 had a restaurant and bar. I saw many fathers drinking beer while their kids tried to win stuffed animals.<\/p>\n

When I got home, I did a little research and learned that Round 1 is a Japanese company that is trying to build arcades around the world.<\/p>\n

Uselessness Never Tasted So Good<\/h2>\n

Have you ever heard of Kinder Surprise? It is a candy that consists of a plastic egg wrapped in chocolate. Inside the egg is some kind of small toy. The Italian company Ferrero has sold 30 billion of them since 1974, mostly in Europe. However, they are not sold in America, because American food safety laws prohibit putting plastic inside food.<\/p>\n

I first learned about Kinder Joy at a game convention about 15 years ago. Some guests from Germany brought some and I really liked them. The toys were cool and of high quality. They made great pawns for board games.<\/p>\n

When I returned from Japan, I noticed that Ferrero had started selling a similar product, called Kinder Joy, in America. In Kinder Joy, the chocolate and the plastic toy are in separate halves of a plastic egg. The candy tastes like a super-sweet version of Nutella. The toys are not as good at the European version.<\/p>\n
