Click through if you would like to hear the tale of my vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u5e74\u3092\u53d6\u3063\u3066\u3044\u3066\u4eca\u773c\u93e1\u3092\u304b\u3051\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059.  \u79c1\u306e\u8996\u529b\u306e\u8a71\u3092\u8aad\u3080\u305f\u3081\u306b\u30af\u30ea\u30c3\u30af\u3057\u3066\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044.<\/p>\n<h2>A Conversation about Progressives That Isn&#8217;t Political<\/h2>\n<p>Back when I was about 45 and still living in Japan, I noticed that my once-better-than-perfect vision was starting to fail.  All my life I have had 20\/15 vision, which was actually slightly better than standard 20\/20.  But every single person in my family wears glasses, so I have always known that I was doomed to need them as well.<\/p>\n<p>45\u6b73\u3067\u65e5\u672c\u306b\u4f4f\u3093\u3067\u3044\u305f\u6642\u3001\u79c1\u306e\u3088\u3044\u8996\u529b\u304c\u60aa\u304f\u306a\u308a\u59cb\u3081\u3066\u3044\u308b\u306e\u306b\u6c17\u304c\u4ed8\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f. \u751f\u6daf\u3092\u304b\u3051\u3066\u5e38\u306b\u76ee\u304c\u3088\u304b\u3063\u305f\u3067\u3059.  \u3067\u3082\u5bb6\u65cf\u306e\u7686\u304c\u773c\u93e1\u3092\u304b\u3051\u3066\u3044\u308b\u304b\u3089\u79c1\u3082\u773c\u93e1\u304c\u5fc5\u8981\u306b\u306a\u308b\u3068\u308f\u304b\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f.<\/p>\n<p>The last time I renewed my driver&#8217;s license, I had to squint really hard to pass the vision test.  When small print in dim light became impossible to read, I knew my time was up.  Hey, 48 years was a good run!<\/p>\n<p>\u6700\u5f8c\u306e\u904b\u8ee2\u514d\u8a31\u306e\u66f4\u65b0\u306e\u6642\u3001\u8996\u529b\u306e\u8a66\u9a13\u306e\u5408\u683c\u306e\u305f\u3081\u306b\u76ee\u3092\u305f\u304f\u3055\u3093\u7d30\u3081\u306a\u304f\u3061\u3083\u3044\u3051\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3067\u3057\u305f.  \u8584\u6697\u3044\u5834\u6240\u3067\u7d30\u304b\u3044\u6587\u5b57\u3092\u8aad\u3080\u306e\u304c\u7121\u7406\u306b\u306a\u308b\u3068\u3001\u3088\u3044\u8996\u529b\u306e\u6642\u671f\u304c\u7d42\u308f\u308b\u306e\u3092\u3057\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f.  48\u5e74\u9593\u306f\u3088\u304b\u3063\u305f\u306e\u306b\uff01<\/p>\n<p>This month I visited an optometrist for the first time.  Everyone there assumed that I already wore glasses and were shocked when I asked really basic questions like &#8220;Do I need glasses?&#8221;  Since the doctor worked for a glasses store, his answer was, obviously, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u4eca\u6708\u3001\u59cb\u3081\u3066\u773c\u79d1\u306b\u639b\u304b\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002  \u773c\u79d1\u306e\u7686\u306f\u79c1\u304c\u3082\u3046\u773c\u93e1\u3092\u304b\u3051\u3066\u3044\u308b\u3068\u601d\u3063\u3066\u3044\u3066[\u79c1\u306f\u773c\u93e1\u304c\u5fc5\u8981\u3067\u3059\u304b]\u3068\u304b\u306e\u57fa\u672c\u7684\u306a\u8cea\u554f\u3092\u805e\u304f\u3068\u3073\u3063\u304f\u308a\u3057\u307e\u3057\u305f.  \u533b\u8005\u306f\u773c\u93e1\u306e\u5e97\u3067\u50cd\u3044\u3066\u3044\u308b\u304b\u3089\u3082\u3061\u308d\u3093[\u306f\u3044!]\u3068\u7b54\u3048\u307e\u3057\u305f.<\/p>\n<p>I walked away with two pair of glasses, one for general use and one specifically for computer use.  They both have &#8220;progressive&#8221; lenses, meaning the focal distance changes depending on where you look though the lenses.  The computer glasses were immediately helpful for work and for reading.  The general pair, however, are very difficult to use.  My peripheral vision swims wildly and tilting my head to get the exact right angle is tricky and annoying.
